Enjoy the Holidays in Payson and Arizona's Rim Country

Soon, the holidays will be upon us, bringing days off from school and work, visits with loved ones, religious ceremonies and in many cases, gifts.
This time of year is very special in Payson and Arizona’s Rim Country. The hint of colder weather brings out the hot chocolate and warm blankets and the sense of community, caring and comradery of a small town comes alive. What some call “Holiday Cheer” comes in the form of holiday lights being put up on all the light poles in town, local food drives, school events, choir productions and of course our favorite small-town special events that warm our hearts and bring us all together.
Getting into the Holiday Spirit
The best part of celebrating the holidays in a small town is how we feel and the joy that comes from sharing this time with others. So here are some ideas of how you can prepare for the upcoming holiday season and enjoy your family time right here in Arizona’s Rim Country.
Snuggle under blankets and watch holiday movies — Netflix has quite a few.
Turn on the holiday tunes and don’t be afraid to sing along.
Bring special holiday treats in to work to share with your co-workers.
Save some of those treats, or make more for the staff and residents at a local nursing facility.
Send handwritten letters from the heart to the people in your life.
Go Christmas caroling
Donate presents for children in need.
Be extra nice to the next cashier who helps you.
Drink eggnog or eat traditional holiday treats.
Give the gift of time.
Decorate your home.
Call an old friend or someone you haven’t connected with in awhile.
Become a Secret Santa and give a special gift to someone worse off than you.
Buy coffee for a stranger.
Go to a church holiday service.
Leave a nice tip.
Offer to babysit so overwhelmed parents can have a night out.
Bake cookies or holiday favorites and share them with others.
Throw a holiday party.
Do something nice for your neighbors like shovel snow or put their trash cans away.
Buy grocery store gift certificates and give them to people experiencing tough times.
Practice random acts of kindness where ever you go.
Carry gift cards, money, or small gifts you can hand out when something inspires you.
Participate in food drives or set one up yourself.
Volunteer — there are so many opportunities and needs at this time of year.
Watch children open presents.
Listen deeply to someone who needs to talk.
Watch “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer”.
Pay for someone’s meal or groceries.
Leave Christmas trees on the doorsteps of people who can’t afford them. Ring the bell and run.

November 23, 2018 – Swiss Village Lighting
For 38 years now this small town event has been happening in Payson, AZ, and yes you read that right, Payson has a Swiss Village. The merchants pull out all the stops and decorate their store fronts to create this magical wonderland on the day after Thanksgiving. Ron and Carol Reed of Payson Candle Factory started this family event in 1979. People come from all over Arizona to see the lights, join in the fun and see Santa. One year, the event drew 4,000 people, who strolled past the many decorated trees while sipping hot cider and enjoying the festive atmosphere. This year the jolly old elf himself, Santa arrives at 6 pm on a Payson firetruck. So round-up the family and be sure to arrive early to join in on all the games, shop, live music and much more.
